Heterotrophic / autotrophic

The bacteria in the activated sludge are for the most part heterotrophic bacteria, i.e. organic substances are required for creation of cell structure.
In contrast, autotrophic organisms are able to produce the organic substances of the cell themselves. They use CO2 and chemical energy, which they acquire, e.g. during nitrification.
