Symbiosis = Information exchange and cooperation in the metabolism of biofilms

Microorganisms in small or loose cell aggregates do not experience ideal growth conditions.
Settling on solid surfaces offers significant advantages. The bacteria are compact on these surfaces and can benefit from short nutrient transport pathways and symbiotic metabolic processes. It has also been found that information can be exchanged (quorum sensing). Thereby, changes in environmental conditions are taken into account more quickly, microorganisms become more resistant end provide for a more stable removal performance.
In the S::Select® process, these properties are promoted and supported by the microorganism communities that are based on the carrier material MIMICs®.
