Phosphate accumulating organisms, PAO

Polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAO) are the basis of biological phosphate elimination.
If these microorganisms do not have oxygen available, they can release the phosphates stored in their cells. It releases energy that cells need to survive.
Later, when the PAO microorganisms return to an aerobic area, they re-absorb dissolved phosphate and also store additional phosphates in their cells.
