Deammonification at a central biogas and sewage sludge digestion plant in Finland. Consistently stable operation since 2012 despite demanding and heavily fluctuating influent values.

The plant processes green and food waste as well as municipal sewage sludge in a mesophilic digestion with a retention time of around 40 days. Due to the high organic load, the nitrogen load of the centrate is very high and the typical NH4-N concentrations are from 2000 to 2500 mg/l NH4-N.
Since the plant supplies the treated wastewater to a small wastewater treatment plant with very limited capacity, there was a need for intensive pretreatment. For this purpose, a conventional nitrification/denitrification with dosing of an external carbon source (methanol) was initially installed.
Because of the high N concentrations, correspondingly large amounts of methanol (denitrification) had to be dosed, which led to repeated overheating (heat due to the intensive biological processes) and collapse of the biological stage. The conventional biological system (nitrification/denitrification) could therefore not be operated as intended.
In 2012, the system was converted to Deammonification (EssDe®). The nitrogen is only partially oxidized to nitrite. External carbon is not required during deammonification. Deammonification barely releases any heat. In addition, energy consumption is massively reduced. The operating expenses have been massively reduced (half of the aeration energy is saved and methanol can be foregone altogether).
Since the conversion, the plant has achieved excellent effluent values of approx. 95% ammonium removal and more than 85% total nitrogen removal. The operation is stable from the beginning and is supervised by the plant in normal shifts.
