Glycogen Accumulating Organisms, GAO

In wastewater, glycogen-accumulating organisms (GAO) compete with phosphate accumulating organisms (PAO) because they compete for the same carbon sources in an anoxic environment. GAOs do not participate in an increase of phosphate removal. To encourage biological phosphate removal, operating conditions that favor the growth of PAOs can be achieved.
