Protozoa

Protozoa are not only extremely important for the whole activated sludge system and its properties, they are also excellent indicators of the state of the biological system. In contrast to the bacteria, which cannot be identified on the basis of the microscopic picture, they are very well suited to give indications of problems in the biology and the quality of the effluent.
The mere presence or absence of certain protozoa and the composition of the species are valuable hints. In general, the richer the composition of species and the greater the number of unicellular organisms, the healthier and more efficient the biocenosis.
The unicellular organisms eat free-floating bacteria and thus ensure a significant improvement in effluent quality. They clear the surface of floc and granules and thus shape the composition of the population.
