Assimilative capacity

The assimilative capacity of a body of water depends on many factors. The biological purification performance of microorganisms in rivers and stagnant waters depends i.e. from temperature, oxygen content, solar radiation. Even dissolved nutrients such as nitrates and phosphates as well as mineral salts and organic substances as well as undissolved ingredients influence the environment for microorganisms and thus the self-cleaning activity.
The biological processes produce living biomass, which serves as food for higher organisms.
