Sessile life forms

Less than 1% of all bacteria live freely dispersed in water in a planktonic state. 99% settle on interfaces and form sessile communities or biofilms. Sessile life on solid surfaces offers distinct advantages over the planktonic life of microorganisms.
The bacterial communities are very tightly packed on these surfaces and perform symbiotic metabolic processes whereby bacterial groups can benefit from intermediate and end products of other organisms.
